Choices Count
Posted on August 12th, 2010.You and I have an opportunity to make good choices every day. According to the newscasts I’ve seen recently, one would think that only poor choices are highlighted in life. By all means, who chooses to reach through the window and hit a drive-thru restaurant attendant because it is not lunch time yet to serve chicken nuggets? What flight attendant (in their right mind) goes off on a passenger, pulls the emergency exit door open and slides down an airplane slide thinking they did nothing wrong. Who thinks they can do what they want, when they want, and how they want convincing themselves that it won’t ever affect anyone around them.
Proverbs 8:10-11 says, Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold. For wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.
Could we ever use a good dose of God’s wisdom in our lives today? In fact, every decision you and I make in everyday life will affect someone somewhere at some point in time. We are not often reminded of this fact, but what we decide does impact others.
While reflecting on this recently, my mind went to the life of David in the Old Testament. All through 1 and 2 Samuel, David made choices. Most of them were pleasing to God. Some of the time, David’s choices directly disobeyed what God wanted. Witnessing this tennis match of human volition, David’s good choices when he obeyed God led to some incredible blessings. When David made poor decisions and disobeyed God’s plan, the results were devastating for him, his household and even some negative outcomes for the entire nation of Israel.
How can a “man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:21-23) who was to be known as a person who would do anything God told him to do ever make a bad choice? Try disobedience. Maybe some of David’s poor choices were because of selfish pride. At times David was not taking care of his responsibilities like he should have been which led to his demise.
Our choices count. What I do today will impact someone. What you decide tomorrow could impact an entire nation. So, why not take a step back to look more intently at some every day or monumental choices you are facing? Convert the seriousness of your choices to the category of covenants. Covenants matter for eternity! Make a covenant with God to obey Him. Make a covenant to honor the commitment you have with your family. Make a covenant to work an honest day. Make a covenant with your eyes so you are dwelling on images that are pure and noble. These choices count so much that they can lead to blessings from heaven, or they can include consequences nobody wants in life.
