Young Adults Raise Money for Students
Posted on June 8th, 2010.The young adults at Calvary Community Church in Johnson City, NY, give credence that young people can, indeed, make a difference.
The small group of adults, ages 24-30, is helping individuals in their community in a meaningful way.
For the past three years, the group has raised approximately $4,000 a year to help financially-challenged individuals attend local colleges and universities. Money for the Hope Scholarship is raised through organized fundraisers and donations. Seven college scholarships have been awarded through the group’s work.
Last year, the group–made up of close-knit friends who spend time together outside of volunteer efforts–focused on awarding scholarships to single mothers.
“The group is a natural extension of our internal friendships,” says Luke Cody.
“A few years ago our small group started trying to think of how we could be more involved in our community, just [having] a positive impact on others,” says Jess Himmelberger.
Members of the group are quick to point out that Hope Scholarships exist because of their group effort to make a difference in the lives of others.
“I think we feel that even though it is a small thing, it is still significant to the recipients,” says Luke. “We want to help others, and this is a way we can do it as a group.”
