Teacher’s Tips: Digging Deeper
Posted on March 5th, 2010.Digging Deeper
Adult curriculum today is well written and provides all you need to create a lesson for your group. But what if you want to dig deeper? What resources are available?
- Atlas: Bible Atlases have detailed maps of the world during bible times. One map, however, is not enough for the entire scope of the bible. Remember that with conquests of different kingdoms, regional names sometimes changed, and so maps noting the time of Moses will have some different names from the time of Jesus.
- Concordance: A concordance lists words mentioned in the bible, and notes the verses where that word occurs. Some bibles have limited concordances. However, if you want a more extensive listing, look for an exhaustive concordance. Be sure to note which version of the bible the concordance uses. If you use the New International Version, you will want a concordance using words found in the NIV translation.
- Word Study: Word study books give meanings of words used in the bible. Because the bible has been translated from Hebrew and Greek, sometimes the English word does not always convey the fullest meaning of the original language. Word studies show the original word meaning and how it was used in bible times.
- Commentary: Commentaries “comment” on biblical texts. There are many commentaries, from a variety of viewpoints. Some are very detailed using original languages and scholarly terms; others are written using everyday language and giving a basic overview. Wesleyan Publishing House has published a limited number of commentaries written by Wesleyan teachers and professors that are easy to read and understand.
- Bible Encyclopedias: These offer a variety of information: word study, maps, pictures and historical context of the biblical words and text.
- Study Bibles: Many study bibles are published using different bible translations. Some are for specific groups: teens, women, men…etc; some are for specific stages or needs in life. Study bibles combine all or some of the resources mentioned above in an all-in-one resource.
The vast array of resources can be overwhelming; before you make an investment, ask your pastor for recommendations. The right resources can provide deeper understanding of God’s word, but remember that understanding is only the first step. As you study, ask God to transform your heart. Then ask the question: How can I use this new knowledge to love God more and serve others better? Then do it.
