About Us
The Spiritual Formation Department (SFD) desires to make more and better disciples of Jesus Christ. We come alongside the local church helping every child, student and adult become more like Jesus – one life at a time.
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." - Matthew 22:37-40
The process of spiritual formation is for every person to become more like Jesus Christ every day. It involves every person and it involves every part of every person. One poignant way to communicate this is wrapped up in the words and concept of four words: HEAD, HEART, HAND and HABITS. In order to combat the enormous disconnect among followers of Jesus Christ between beliefs and behaviors, much emphasis needs to be rekindled regarding the knowledge, power and activity of God in every individual’s life.
- To follow the Lord fully we must focus on the head (intellect and devotion), the heart (power and emotion), the hand (intentional service), and the habits (daily spiritual disciplines).
- Various spiritual foci and ministry activities will foster this concept and enable all to grow in their personal, daily walk with Jesus Christ. To exclude one aspect in favor of another is to rip what should be a “seamless garment.”
- To emphasize one aspect in favor of another would be to promote a “theological head trip;” a “feel good religion based on human experience;” a “social service agency,” and/or a “cloistered monastic experience.”
- Yet, when the true power of the Holy Spirit joins with our heads, hearts, hands, and habits – the whole of Christ and genuine personal holiness is made visible through the Church by and for every generation.
- No matter what the age or spiritual condition of an individual, this process continues on through this side of heaven.

SFD was formed when the 2004 General Conference of The Wesleyan Church. It is the discipleship arm of the Church for children, youth and adult ministries. It is responsible for a broad range of ministries including our Wesleyan Youth Conventions to helping our districts and local churches with all discipleship endeavors.
